Kenya Nyeri Gura Peaberry

Somewhere in the mist above Nyeri County — on the slopes of Mount Kenya, where the altitude pushes past 1,700 meters and volcanic soil meets equatorial light — a handful of cherries per tree develop differently than the rest. The seed inside doesn't split into two flat halves the way coffee seeds normally do. Instead, it stays round, dense, and whole. That's a Peaberry — a natural anomaly that makes up less than 10% of any harvest and is prized by specialty roasters for the depth and intensity it brings to the cup.

This is October's Coffee of the Month from North Arrow. Sourced from the Gura Factory in Nyeri County — one of the flagship wet mills of the Othaya Farmers Co-operative Society — it represents the work of roughly 500 smallholder farming families, each tending less than a hectare on some of the most celebrated coffee land on earth. The fully washed process, double-fermented with water drawn from the Gura River, produces the signature Kenya profile: bright, complex, and unmistakably alive with fruit and clarity.

The Gura Factory operates one of the most carefully managed washing stations in Nyeri. Cherries are hand-sorted at intake, fermented in open-air tanks for 36–72 hours, then raised-bed dried under controlled airflow. The Peaberry selection is sorted manually after milling — a tedious, painstaking process that results in a bean with notably uniform density and roasting consistency. Every cup from this lot carries the fingerprint of that attention: clean, layered, bright without being sharp.
