High in the Yungas, where cloud forest meets clay-loam soil at 1500 masl, 33 small family farms quietly built one of South America's most resilient specialty co-ops. This is their coffee — a fully washed, sun-dried Bolivian from Cooperativa Agrícola Cafetalera San Juan in Caranaví.
San Juan was founded in 1974 with 40 farmers committed to a simple idea: small family farms, organic methods, and a place at the table for Caranaví. The model worked, then it didn't — between 2006 and 2017, aging trees and falling investment knocked production to its knees. Master cupper Felix Chambi Garcia changed that. He brought 16+ years of specialty experience and put quality control at the center of the co-op, building a lab in Alto Cochabamba where every parchment lot is evaluated. Sub-spec lots get sold at home; only the best make it across the border. Production, quality, and varietal diversity have all climbed since.
This lot is fully washed and sun-dried — ripe-only picking, density-floated, depulped on small mechanical machines, fermented 18–24 hours, washed clean, and finished slowly on raised screen beds. That careful protocol is what gives the cup its polish.
In the cup: cocoa, hints of caramel, and fruity undertones — smooth, creamy, and lifted by a clean, bright acidity. A medium roast that lets every layer of the origin come through.
